The Keckler Ax System – KLAX

Of all the products we were excited to see at Blade show, the new prototype Keckler ax was by far the most exciting. We were intrigued when we saw the teaser pics Glen Keckler released with his Kickstarter program shortly before the show. This unique ax head is a pretty innovative design.

The company is no stranger to clever design; in this project they were looking to create a light, handy, multipurpose tool, and they seem to have accomplished that goal. Glen Keckler has previously invented a series of other knives and tools (these are produced by other ‘big name’ companies). His new axe head, is still currently under development, but should be in production by the fall. Dubbed the “KLAX”, it will be available in several configurations: Lumberjack, Woodsman, Feller and Ti (the latter an ultra lightweight titanium version). The design promises to be “more then just an ax” and will include these features:

KLAX – Lumberjack

  • Heat treated stainless steel
  • Clamping system
  • Thumb jimping
  • Bottle opener
  • Five wrenches
  • Hex bit driver
  • Lanyard hole
  • Caribiner

  • Hammer
  • Ruler
  • Cover

KLAX – Woodsman

Says the designer, “The KLAX is a multi-tool built into the head of an ax.  It allows you to attach the ax head to a handle quickly in the field.  It uses the nested clamping system shown here.   The clamps rotate out from the handle for use.”

With bushcraft, survival training and overall preparedness on the rise, these ax heads are sure to be a hit. I cannot wait to try them out, and look forward to putting a production model thru the paces this coming fall.

Mad Duo Nate

About the author: Nathan “Mad Duo Nate” Murr is a former USMC Sergeant who recently transition to being a nasty civilian. He lives largely on nicotine, whiskey and hate and can be frequently found orating Kipling poems to frightened hipsters who have no idea WTAF he’s talking about. A graduate of the Camp Lejeune School for Wayward Boys, he was a Marine NCO, Infantry Platoon Sergeant and Scout Sniper team leader. He has many years of experience as a spiral tube technician, is a fully qualified American Jedi and handsome badass. He has numerous deployments to the Middle East and Africa, is something of an idiot savant when it comes finger-fucking stuff to make it work better than its original designers could, and is probably best described as a sociopathic philosopher with vestigial cutthroat (though poetic) tendencies. Thus far Murr’s writing career has included such publications as Breach-Bang-Clear, Military.com, RECOIL Magazine and Penthouse letters.
