The typical Russian AK 104 is a carbine version of the third-generation AK103 with a folding stock, but there are other versions. These include a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR) variant. The AK-104 is chambered in 7.62×39 and has a popular U.S. variant in the form of the Palmetto State Armory AK 104.
Unlike the AKS-74U, which uses a skeletonized folding stock, the 104 is equipped with a solid (folding) stock and a polymer pistol grip. The barrel is shorter than the 103, but there are other differences — particularly the muzzle device (a combination flash hider-muzzle brake). As with its Western analogs, the muzzle brake is intended to reduce recoil and mitigate muzzle climb.
The AK-104 uses a notched rear tangent sight calibrated in 100m increments up to half a klick (500m), though the generally accepted maximum effective range is 200m. Only the front sight (for elevation) is easily adjustable in the field. The rear sight is, at least in some doctrines) adjusted before being issued by an armorer. 104s commonly have a side dovetail mounting rail for optics.
