The day has finally arrived, Bowe Bergdahl will be charged with desertion.
In the words of the consummate wordsmith, Yogi Berra: “It’s like deja–vu, all over again.”
Two months ago, almost to the day, we saw this piece of news and posted it on Facebook.
It was widely reported in the news, only to be decried by the Whitehouse as a vicious, unfounded rumor. Well here we are again.
“I was pissed off then, and I am even more so now with everything going on. Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war, and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him.”
-Former Army Sgt. Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl’s platoon at the time of his disappearance.

According to numerous reports, Bowe R. Bergdahl (also known in some circles as “asshat clownfucker”) will finally be charged with desertion, although its unclear whether he will actually court-martialed. The Army is allegedly looking for swift action, albeit after waiting nearly a year since his recovery. The delay is likely due to a thorough investigation and shake down for relevant intelligence. As you are no doubt aware, Bergdahl has been a subject of heated discussion ever since his return in May of last year. His former teammates and squad mates have very few nice things to say about the guy, and there are reports of Army mandated gag orders being pushed down the chain. Meanwhile people in and out of uniform are still confused by the president’s decision to trade five jihadist detainees for Bergdahl.
President Obama has defended his actions, saying “I make absolutely no apologies for making sure we get back a young man to his parents. This is somebody’s child.”
From anger stemming from the casualties sustained searching for Bergdahl, to his father Bob Bergdahl’s strange show of solidarity by growing an ‘I live in a mud hut’ beard and learning Pashto…Or his controversial words at the white house press conference after Bowe Bergdahl’s return; “In the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful”.
This has been as bizarre a story has it has been emotional, and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who wore a uniform willing to say ‘Well, maybe there’s more to this story.’ We understand that and empathize with those who’d just as soon him see him stretched by the neck, despite his right to due process (however much of a treasonous fuck he might be).
Regardless of how you feel about Bergdahl, he is back in the states and still on active duty. He has completed the Army’s formal “reintegration program” and has received psychological treatment. Currently the mystery surrounding his disappearance and recovery has helped drive this story into the headlines and has keeping it there as Americans await the release of the DOD investigation. This much is clear, they have enough evidence to bring forward the charge of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
We are curious to see how this all plays out. There are a lot of people that have formed their opinions already, including our own writing staff. Many want to see him locked in a jail cell to rot, or at the very least punished and thrown out with a dishonorable discharge if found guilty. At this point is doesn’t seem to really matter what the verdict turns out to be, Bowe Bergdahl is a marked man and will likely suffer the consequences of walking off of that FOB in Afghanistan for the rest of his life.
