VODA Bigots are Firearm Safety Racists

Think the four basic tenets of gun handling are important? Approve of their use on the range? You might just be a racist. Well, that’s what Lucien Black (or Michael Thervil, or whatever his name is) says. Because, you know, calling tomfuckery out is tantamount to waving torches and puttin’ together a lynch mob. Mad Duo

VODA Bigots are Firearm Safety Racists

Ryan Hey

For the past few days, the gun world has seen the videos and subsequent meltdown of VODA Consulting. The video was taken by a friend as Lucien demonstrated knife and gun “tactics” at an indoor range in North Carolina. The video clearly shows Lucien discharge a round into the ceiling of the range. Lucien has since been banned from the range.

BLUF (bottom line up front): discharging a bullet into the ceiling of an indoor range has nothing to do with race, creed, religion, or sexual preference. It has everything to do with being stupid, unsafe, and trying to make a name for yourself by claiming you’re being discriminated against does not change that.

If by some fluke you haven’t seen any of his “training videos,” this is the dude we’re talking about.

What has transpired in the following days is nothing short of a reflection of the current “victim mindset.” Lucien has yet to take full responsibility for the discharged round into the ceiling and claims “shit happens when you innovate.”

Stop. Let’s rewind that for second.

No responsibility taken for an unsafe act that could have endangered anyone else on the range, to include the staff and Lucien himself. No responsibility or taking the consequences like a man. Instead, we hear a “shit happens when you innovate” excuse. This is about as piss poor as it can get. Anyone who has handled firearms long enough knows the four rules:

1. Watch that muzzle. Keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times.
*Not at ceilings or other students.

2. Treat every firearm with the respect due a loaded gun. It might be, even if you think it isn’t.
*Not at other human beings while you are “innovating.” Remember, shit can happen.

3. Be sure of the target and what is in front of it and beyond it.
*Innovators don’t have time to worry about backstops.

4. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
*I’m too busy doing press checks every two rounds to worry about this.

Now the whole conflagration has grown worse.

Within the last 24-48 hours, Lucien has begun claiming that racism is the cause for his banishment from the range and his teaching certification being pulled. Lucien has repeatedly used the terms bigot and racist to describe his critics.

Troopers and Grunts: conflagration.

Racism is a vile thing, and it is entirely possible that a handful of his detractors are bigots – but to blame what’s happened to VODA on racism writ large is ridiculous…and easy, and convenient. Any reply to, or post about, Lucien or VODA (on any venue) should be devoid of any racial overtone. Remember, you are playing into the hands of an expert victim. Is there a potential for bigotry in the firearms industry? Unfortunately, yes, pretty much as there is in any industry. That should not distract from the essential point here.

Lucien Black is unsafe. If you’re going to be a bigot, be a bigot toward unsafe people.

I don’t look at Lucien as an African American. His skin color in this matter means nothing. I look at him as an unsafe, vain person trying to make a name for himself. I look at him as a walking violation of safety rules. I see him as someone who is way out of his lane in regard to what he’s trying to teach. I look at him as a male gun bunny.

One last point, and it does directly concern race. VODA is targeting his closest demographic for business: black gun owners new to the firearm world. He is targeting gun owners who do not yet know what right looks like. They’re uneducated in basic gun safety and fundamentals.

He is propagating unsafe firearms techniques and downright dangerous weapons manipulation, and here is an unfortunate result of that: he has a following that agrees with him based strictly on race rather than skill, proficiency, or the ability to instruct.

How do we check this? Simple. Other minority gun owners and instructors need to take the lead, contacting VODA and talking to him. It’s sad that people of different color can’t have a meaningful debate about a lifestyle that we all love, but the harsh truth is that it’s not always possible. Shooting and the shooting sports should be uniting us as a country, not providing yet another way to divide us by skin color.

For unification to happen, instructors need to be safe and abide by the rules, stay in their lanes, and remain professional. They cannot act like a vain, attention-mongering gun bunny. Communication with the industry, with students, and with the non-gun public must be done in a constructive and positive manner.

It also requires the industry to collectively excise racism in any form.

Other cases will arise in the future, other controversies will come to light, but we can do our best to preempt them. While I wish it were otherwise I fear that any olive branch extended to, or proffers of help made to, VODA Consulting would be a wasted effort.   Looks like we’re all just gonna have to sit back and watch the train wreck as it comes hurtling down the tracks, and hope the shit doesn’t reach all the way to the ceiling. It’s already been shot once.

  1. The second video reminds me of
Archer. ‘Do you want to get shot? Because that’s how you get shot’

Fuck, better wear a vest at that class!

  2. i have been calling him a race baiter for the last 4 months, he and his brother proudle run the USS the “ONLY African American gun club”. the website state that its a place fore blacks to be free from the racist pressures of most ranges. this has been a slow boil for the last 4 months

  3. Idk what all the negative hype is about. This voda dude is clearly oaf. Do you guys know where I can book a course with him??

  4. Granted I just saw the video in the article, but why would I want this fat fuck showing me the Rambo weak hand pistol strong hand get some attack? I hate crayon eaters that use whatever flavor of the PC week to excuse why they are fucktards.

Serious folks eyeball guys that show the fuck ups and the cool guy shit and are ready to put metal to bone. Never heard of this fuck until now, and I know I won’t utilize him.

  5. Please explain how anyone could even think this was a good idea in the age of the internet? Just google safe weapon handling and there ya go and I am pretty certain you will not see the examples shown here. Ahh yes, in regards to race well he is black and stupid and I have several people in my family who are white stupid and pick any race, gender, socioeconomic class and you will find one thing and that is that “stupid is not a black, white, yellow or brown thing but it is just plain stupid”! For him to associate it with race is rediculous as despite the skin color the blood and brain matter are a chunky brownish red for everyone and no amount of carrying on can change that.

The guy “not black guy or white guy but just guy” is a weapons grade retard and only makes people who love firearms look worse in the eyes of people who are not gun people”. Fuck this shit makes me crazy as I have left ranges or let the staff know about unsafe users.

  6. Colion Noir should knock this dude down a peg or two. Colion is someone everyone has respect for as both a gun owner and a man that unfortunately in today’s world does have to deal with bigotry and racism, but hes also smart enough to know when its not racism and can have coherent and intelligent conversations. unfortunately when people like to be victims and play the race card for shit that has nothing to do with racist it often times takes one of their own to knock some sense into him because thats just how racially driven minds work.
