Think the four basic tenets of gun handling are important? Approve of their use on the range? You might just be a racist. Well, that’s what Lucien Black (or Michael Thervil, or whatever his name is) says. Because, you know, calling tomfuckery out is tantamount to waving torches and puttin’ together a lynch mob. Mad Duo
VODA Bigots are Firearm Safety Racists
For the past few days, the gun world has seen the videos and subsequent meltdown of VODA Consulting. The video was taken by a friend as Lucien demonstrated knife and gun “tactics” at an indoor range in North Carolina. The video clearly shows Lucien discharge a round into the ceiling of the range. Lucien has since been banned from the range.
BLUF (bottom line up front): discharging a bullet into the ceiling of an indoor range has nothing to do with race, creed, religion, or sexual preference. It has everything to do with being stupid, unsafe, and trying to make a name for yourself by claiming you’re being discriminated against does not change that.
If by some fluke you haven’t seen any of his “training videos,” this is the dude we’re talking about.
What has transpired in the following days is nothing short of a reflection of the current “victim mindset.” Lucien has yet to take full responsibility for the discharged round into the ceiling and claims “shit happens when you innovate.”
Stop. Let’s rewind that for second.
No responsibility taken for an unsafe act that could have endangered anyone else on the range, to include the staff and Lucien himself. No responsibility or taking the consequences like a man. Instead, we hear a “shit happens when you innovate” excuse. This is about as piss poor as it can get. Anyone who has handled firearms long enough knows the four rules:
1. Watch that muzzle. Keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times.
*Not at ceilings or other students.
2. Treat every firearm with the respect due a loaded gun. It might be, even if you think it isn’t.
*Not at other human beings while you are “innovating.” Remember, shit can happen.
3. Be sure of the target and what is in front of it and beyond it.
*Innovators don’t have time to worry about backstops.
4. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
*I’m too busy doing press checks every two rounds to worry about this.
Now the whole conflagration has grown worse.
Within the last 24-48 hours, Lucien has begun claiming that racism is the cause for his banishment from the range and his teaching certification being pulled. Lucien has repeatedly used the terms bigot and racist to describe his critics.
Troopers and Grunts: conflagration.
Racism is a vile thing, and it is entirely possible that a handful of his detractors are bigots – but to blame what’s happened to VODA on racism writ large is ridiculous…and easy, and convenient. Any reply to, or post about, Lucien or VODA (on any venue) should be devoid of any racial overtone. Remember, you are playing into the hands of an expert victim. Is there a potential for bigotry in the firearms industry? Unfortunately, yes, pretty much as there is in any industry. That should not distract from the essential point here.
Lucien Black is unsafe. If you’re going to be a bigot, be a bigot toward unsafe people.
I don’t look at Lucien as an African American. His skin color in this matter means nothing. I look at him as an unsafe, vain person trying to make a name for himself. I look at him as a walking violation of safety rules. I see him as someone who is way out of his lane in regard to what he’s trying to teach. I look at him as a male gun bunny.
One last point, and it does directly concern race. VODA is targeting his closest demographic for business: black gun owners new to the firearm world. He is targeting gun owners who do not yet know what right looks like. They’re uneducated in basic gun safety and fundamentals.
He is propagating unsafe firearms techniques and downright dangerous weapons manipulation, and here is an unfortunate result of that: he has a following that agrees with him based strictly on race rather than skill, proficiency, or the ability to instruct.
How do we check this? Simple. Other minority gun owners and instructors need to take the lead, contacting VODA and talking to him. It’s sad that people of different color can’t have a meaningful debate about a lifestyle that we all love, but the harsh truth is that it’s not always possible. Shooting and the shooting sports should be uniting us as a country, not providing yet another way to divide us by skin color.
For unification to happen, instructors need to be safe and abide by the rules, stay in their lanes, and remain professional. They cannot act like a vain, attention-mongering gun bunny. Communication with the industry, with students, and with the non-gun public must be done in a constructive and positive manner.
It also requires the industry to collectively excise racism in any form.
Other cases will arise in the future, other controversies will come to light, but we can do our best to preempt them. While I wish it were otherwise I fear that any olive branch extended to, or proffers of help made to, VODA Consulting would be a wasted effort. Looks like we’re all just gonna have to sit back and watch the train wreck as it comes hurtling down the tracks, and hope the shit doesn’t reach all the way to the ceiling. It’s already been shot once.

About the Author: Ryan Hey is a Volstaggian ruffian who loves whiskey, Mad Dog 20/20 and long range basllistics. Once a connoisseur of local chais from Safwan to Mosul and Al Kut to Anbar Providence, he now spends his time talking to customers and long range shooters about ballistic chronographs. He also spends a great deal of time developing close social media relations with well-known gun bunnyies and unsafe weapons instructors. Interestingly, phallic symbols seem to mysteriously appear on other competitor’s trucks and gear at long range matches wherein Hey is competing. He’s known to infiltrate any accessible body of water once inebriated and for his ability bounce of marble floors better than basketball. We can neither confirm nor deny that Ryan has had an unnatural mancrush on Ajay Devgan for years.
