My first impression of the Solstice was wow. It’s a beautiful knife and incredibly classy. It truly fits the Gentleman’s (or Gentlewoman’s, Ladies, what have you, etc) Style. I have The Solstice in carbon fiber with a satin blade finish and straight blade style. The blade itself is well-designed and incredibly sharp. It’s durable and has handled all that I’ve thrown at it so far. I’ve used it to open mail and breakdown boxes and even managed to open a mint wrapper with one hand. All while looking stylish the whole time.

The Blade
If you’re not familiar with what “Crucible s35vn” means, it basically means that this is some high-quality material. The knife blade is made from Crucible Industries’ CPM S35VN, a martensitic stainless steel. Martensitic stainless steels are used for their exceptional edge retention and corrosion and wear resistance. Some applications include cutlery, scalpels, internal clamps, turbine blades and razor blades. That is what the blade is made out of. As strong as it is, I recommend the Strategy’s wider blade if you’re going to be using the knife for heavy-duty tasks such as breaking down boxes. Not because it can’t handle the job, it can. The Strategy would only be easier to utilize.
The Handle
I’m using the carbon fiber handle option, and let me say that it’s remarkably lightweight, so much so that I forgot that I was carrying it a few times. It fits perfectly in my Long Walks Waist Pack and my pocket. It is super sleek and has a subtle, stunning pattern.
The Designer
Andrew Demko is the designer behind the Ocaso Solstice. His journey into the industry began in 1988 when he was in 7th grade. With such an early start, Andrew has been inventing locking mechanisms and crafting custom knives for over 25 years. Holding multiple patents on his personal knife innovations, Andrew’s exclusive designs are highly sought after.
“If you can’t depend on your knife, what good is the knife?” Andrew Demko
Final Thoughts of The Solstice
Overall, I’m in love with this knife. The craftsmanship and commitment to quality are exceptional. Side note: packaging can play an important part in the presentation of a product, and I loved the level of detail in the packaging.
I’m looking forward to seeing all that Ocaso has to offer, and with any luck, I’ll be back with another Ocaso knife review. In the meantime, I’ll be looking at their beautiful Damascus Solstice and The Strategy. After all, Valentine’s Day is coming up, and now is the perfect time to treat yourself.
About Ocaso Knives
Founder of Ocaso, Ric Valdez, was the Executive Vice President for leading knife manufacturer Cold Steel Knives and has 20 years of experience in the knife industry. As an avid knife collector himself, he sought to make his own EDC accessories that reflected his style. The name itself, Ocaso, is Spanish for “sunset”. The name pays homage to Ojai Valley in Southern California, where the knife company is based. According to Ocaso, the area is “legendary for ‘pink moments’, a period just before sunset when the mountain ranges framing the valley take on a brief pink glow.”
