If you pay attention to handgun optics, you have probably heard of the Holosun 407c X2. It’s a powerhouse optic that just keeps on selling, and there’s a reason why. Take all those things we look for, like quality, long-lasting battery, and good price, and put them in a mixing bowl. Add some awesomeness to it, and the finished result is the 407c X2. I’m not exactly sure if that’s how Holosun makes their optics, but I bet it’s close, give or take a little.
If you haven’t paid attention to the 407c reflex sight but are on the hunt, this is one you should check out. It has just about all the perks you could want in a micro-optic, and the price tag isn’t staggering. I’ve been using Holosun optics for years at work and on my personal firearms. What I look for most in an optic is simplicity, along with a rugged frame and a reticle that will stay zeroed. The Holosun 407c X2 has these features and more. Overview of the Holosun 407c X2 Reflex Sight
One of the things that catches my eye with the 407 is the rounded top. I know this is just a personal preference, but I like the look of it. Holosun has what they call the “Red Super LED” and if the name doesn’t give it away, it’s bright. During the summer days, a bright LED on a pistol optic is important. Fast acquisition of the dot could mean life or death in a self-defense situation. Besides being bright, it’s also night vision compatible, in case you need that as well.

The body of the 407 is made from 7075 T6 aluminum, which is the standard nowadays for any quality optic. It has an anodized finish a total of 10 daylight brightness settings, and two night vision settings. When you carry a handgun, you will be in a mixture of temperatures depending on where you live. The operating range for the 407c X2 is -22 to 140 degrees. There are a few places where negative 22 degrees would be normal, but it’s words for most people.
In the past, I’ve frozen the 407 and baked it in the oven to 140 degrees for about 15 minutes. It didn’t affect the optic or its accuracy once the temperature returned to normal. I haven’t soaked this specific optic in water, but I have plenty of other Holosun optics and didn’t find any damage. It has a water submersion rating of IP67, which means it’s waterproof. The battery does sit under the optic when mounted on a handgun, so a good seal is required to keep water out.
Features That Make This an Incredibly Good Red Dot
One thing I really look for with pistol-mounted red dots is auto-activated technology. After spending years in law enforcement, it has become very clear to me that an auto feature is a must. When people are in a self-defense incident, they won’t have time or even think about turning on an optic. A dead optic on a handgun is useless and defeats the purpose, right? Holosun uses what they call Shake Awake technology to make sure the optic is ready when you are.
You can customize the auto-off setting from 10 minutes to 12 hours. When the optic senses no movement for the programmed time, it shuts down. When you pick it up, it turns on and is ready to go. The other great feature of the X2 version of the 407 is the Solar Failsafe. This is basically a small solar panel built into the top of the optic. It doesn’t recharge the battery but supplements power from light and extends the battery life.
In natural light, the optic can even run when the battery is completely dead. The reason this is a failsafe option is that the 1632 battery already has a 50k-hour battery life. Because of the Shake Awake technology, the optic is only on when you’re using/carrying the gun. With a 50k-hour battery, you may only need to replace it once every few years. I have had mine in the 407c X2 for a little over two years, and it’s still running fine.
A Quality Optic for a Bargain Price
Holosun built the 407c X2 with a multilayer reflective glass and a lock mode to keep the buttons from accidentally being pushed. It has a long-lasting battery life with a failsafe system that can increase that battery life and even run without it. A lifetime warranty is offered by Holosun for the frame and optical system (glass), and the LED has a 10-year warranty. For an optic that sells for less than $300, it’s not hard to see why so many people select the 407c X2.

Other optics in the same price range do not offer as many features as the 407c X2. Holosun has been making optics for years now, and they have earned a reputation for durability and ruggedness. I carry a Holosun on duty daily and know of other law enforcement officers who do as well. Unless you want to spend much more money on a Trijicon, Aimpoint, or Eotech micro-optic, Holosun is the best deal you will find for the money.
