Over the last few years we kept seeing an interesting Magpul PMAG accessory being used by several well-known firearms instructors. Spotted in several different configurations, it would lead us to ask direct questions but we’d usually get a coy smile in return. We learned it was called the MagPod, and despite our best attempts to “liberate” one for testing, we had to wait until they were released by the company.

Left to right: Early prototypes and final production version, extensively field tested by Victory First

Designed specifically for Gen 2 Magpul PMAGs, the MagPod is some four and a half years in the making.  The extensive R&D and prototyping, field trials and shooter feedback resulted in the final production version recently released. The MagPod is designed to serve as a replacement for a bipod on carbines, and in our own experience it fills this role extremely well. You simply remove your existing floor plate, and swap it for the MagPod. Now before any of you lose your mind about placing the magazine of your weapon on the deck to shoot, we would like to refer you here, and here, to read articles dedicated to this bullshit old wives tale. If you  still think that placing your magazine on the deck to shoot in a more stable prone position is somehow wrong, please just stop reading this article now and go make sure your bolt gas rings are not aligned, your parade sling is well oiled and bayonet is sharp.

It’s 2015 people, we just spent the last 13 years kicking the shit out of our weapons in the deserts of Iraq, mountains of Afghanistan and jungles of Africa. Dudes have been using their mags to monopod their rifles for years. Just accept it.

The earlier “open shoe” design (far left) was abandoned for the better bite of an enclosed design.

There are many that feel MagPul’s Gen 2 PMAG is the best variant of them all, and it is certainly one of the most-commonly encountered mags on any range. Due to the design of  the Gen 2 PMAG, the floor plate sides onto the mag from the front. This allows the MagPod to butt against the front spine, making it damn near impossible to bust off. The same reinforcement flange features 8 dimpled pockets for you to color or burn (to note which magazine it belongs to). Below this is a large “horseshoe” type cleat, which looks a little funky but is the secret to the design. This cleat places the magazine, and thus the weapon, flat on the deck when firing from the prone. It essentially levels your system, and digs into dirt, rock, sand and mud.

The bottom of the MadPod grabs just about every type of terrain.

On the underside of the cleat is a rubberized, textured tread sort of like a shoe. This embedded material grips concrete and wood shooting benches, as well as most slick surfaces, surprisingly well. Two additional “cleats” to the rear of the MagPod help bite into the support and create more traction. In addition to its intended use as a monopod the MagPod works well as means of gripping the magazine when in a pouch, and we can already envision the 550 Cord Commandos drilling holes through it to add paracord pull tabs.

The MagPod might not be for everyone, but we feel that it’s going to be a hit with a large slice of AR shooters out there, as well as our hitters in uniform. They come in a pack of three, and sell for around twenty bucks. Check out their Facebook page here for a list of vendors and to scope out cool guy pics.
