The Springfield Armory Model 2020 Redline is an extension of the series that began with the Model 2020 Waypoint. The M2020 Redline is more of a scout rifle configuration than its cousin, utilizing a carbon fiber stock from Grayboe and a lightweight, fluted barrel to keep weight to a minimum.

This won’t mean a lot to someone used to distance shooting accompanied by minimum movement, but it’s gonna be significant to someone who needs to hump their long gun across long distances and/or rugged terrain. 

Compact, lightweight, and maneuverable, the Redline is intentionally reminiscent of the Scout Rifle class of long guns.

Plus, it makes for a pretty good truck gun / trunk gun option.

Springfield Armory Model 2020 Redline

The compact bolt gun has several attributes to recommend it, including:

• Adjustable length of pull
• Carbon-fiber jacketed barrels
• Threaded muzzle
• Minimum overall length 36.5 inches
• Integral bubble level behind the action.
• Fluted bolt with dual locking lugs
• Threaded barrel with removable SA Radial Brake
• TriggerTech trigger
• Guaranteed .75 MOA accuracy (3-shot group at 100 yards w/ match ammo and a competent shooter)

Let’s take a closer look. 

Springfield Armory Model 2020 Redline

The Redline probably owes its existence to the popularity of the preceding Springfield Model 2020 Waypoint (q.v.). Like the Waypoint it’s offered with a choice of variations. In the Redline’s case, that’s (initially) two calibers: .308 and 6.5 CM, further divided into two different barrel lengths: 16″ and 20″. Everything about it is designed to be as small and light as possible without sacrificing functionality and life expectancy. Will that design work? We’ll know once it starts appearing in large numbers “in the wild.” 

BSF Barrel

The free-floated BSF barrel is jacketed in a roll-wrapped carbon fiber sleeve and loaded under tension. Because the majority (95%) of the sleeve doesn’t make physical contact with the barrel there are ready-made cooling air gaps. The barrel’s fluting (beneath the sleeve) provides additional surface cooling area. Springfield cites these things as a contributor to consistent point-of-impact hits during shot strings. The detachable radial brake, of course, reduces recoil. This particular brake directs gas outward all the way around the brake. The barrel is suppressor-ready, which SA celebrated by teaming up with Silencer Central to provide a free $200 NFA tax stamp. 

Action

Stock

Springfield says they used a skeletonized Grayboe Trekker stock to further enhance the light weight and overall capabilities of the Redline. The stock features an adjustable length of pull (LoP), allowing the shooter to make .25″ adjustments between 13.25″ and 14.25″; it can be further adjusted out to 16″ with additional spacers. It has three sling studs (places to attach a sling, not tiny little badass dudes), and lightening cuts in both forend and buttstock. The geometry of said stock includes a vertical grip, preferred by some for comfort and also something said to be enable better trigger control.

Trigger

The Redline’s trigger uses TriggerTech’s “Frictionless Release Technology” and a patented free-floating roller; adjustment is from 2.5 to 5 pounds. The safety is designed to be low-profile and snag-free, which is obviously a benefit if you’re going to be moving through the brush.

Calibers

The Redline was initially available in .308 and 6.5CM.
