Sic semper tyrannis corporativis. Ghost Soldier is an ex-military-turned-vigilante action thriller starring Jim Caviezel as former Green Beret Henry Fitzgerald. When a corporation moves into rural Wyoming hoping to take land from the local ranchers, the retired Special Forces soldier puts up a fight for the little man. It has classic action movie fights, futuristic tech, and a healthy splash of red-blooded rebellion.

Ghost Soldier Movie: Our First Look

As trailers go, Ghost Soldier’s is pretty comprehensive. The premise feels a little run-of-the-mill, which isn’t always a bad thing. You know the premise. It’s very common in Kinetic Cinema.

A trained killer, usually ex-military (and almost always SOF), living a quiet life gets disrupted when an evil organization starts harassing the people around him. Armed with high-tech weapons and militarized movie logic, he embarks on a one-man mission for rescue and revenge against a private army.

Fitz uses a high tech sniper rifle and futuristic projectiles.
It’s hard to tell from what we see in the trailer whether it’s the rifle or the projectile that’s more high-tech here.

This version of the genre feels a bit like Leon got thrown into the Milagro Beanfield War armed with tech straight out of Titanfall (if any of those references land). As usual, there has to be some suspension of disbelief to accommodate futuristic tech, plot armor and the like. But Ghost Soldier looks like a fun new take on a badass action movie, so if that’s your thing, you’ll probably think it’s cool.

Ghost Soldier is an interesting mix of contemporary weaponry and future tech.
Ghost Soldier has some futuristic tech, true. If you’re looking for a grounded combat movie, look elsewhere. But if you just want a fun watch, this might be just it. If it’s already a one-man army action-revenge story, realism can only go so far. Why not throw in cool technology?

More about Ghost Soldier

Fitz is an ex-Green Beret living in rural Wyoming. After failing to buy his neighbor’s land, a corporation turns to running them off the property using corrupt officials and fire. He puts up a fight, but his neighbor’s grandson is kidnapped and their property burned. Little do the corporate thugs know he’s a weapons engineer with a private bunker of advanced tech and a disdain for corporate terrorism.

Caviezel's character has the Latin phrase De Oppresso Liber tattooed on his back.
Fitz’s De Oppresso Liber tattoo and the scars of old wounds. It’s clearly (and likely intentionally) reminiscent of John Wick’s Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat back tattoo – also revealed in a shower scene.

Ghost Soldier feels thoroughly anti-corporation, a somewhat unique detour from stereotypical action film antagonists in the era of John Wick, Extraction, and Nobody. Despite its badass fighting-movie exterior, it carries a deeply American theme of pride, resilience, and freedom. Some people won’t like the messages in a movie like this, but it’s hard to argue that a shoot ’em up with relevant social commentary isn’t refreshing.

The Action Thriller’s Cast

Fitz is a substantially different role for Caviezel than he had in Passion of the Christ.
Jim Caviezel takes the lead role as Fitz, a stark departure from playing Jesus in Passion of the Christ.

The listed cast includes Jim Caviezel, Garret Dillahunt, Shea Whigham, Olivia Thirlby, and Beau Knapp. IMDB also lists Alexej Manvelov, but no other source does. Ghost Soldier is directed by William Eubank and written by Chris Papasadero, produced by William Sherak and David Zelon.
