Word has come from Lorain County that an Elyria police officer (Elyria, OH) will not be charged in a line-of-duty fatal shooting earlier this year. That’s both right and proper, given that the officer did what we’d classify as very solid work. The suspect, 37-year-old John Johnson, had taken a woman hostage, forced her into an apartment, and presented a weapon. Reports indicate he pointed a handgun at both the officer and the woman.

The officer responded quickly, appropriately, and skillfully, and the result? Happy Unalive Day, John!

Evidently, the incident reportedly began when EPD officers responded to an armed robbery call at an AT&T store in their city, with subsequent information clarifying that it was the robbery of a Brink’s armored truck at the AT&T store. Johnson forced the driver into the truck, stole an unspecified amount of money, and fled in a separate vehicle.

Elyria Police: Pursuit and Officer Involved Shooting

That vehicle was subsequently located nearby, which resulted in a pursuit by LEOs from multiple agencies. After a chase reaching speeds of at least 100 mph, the suspect crashed his vehicle, evidently with the help of some spike strips. He bailed, then forced a nearby woman and possibly some of her children into an apartment adjacent to where his vehicle was disabled.

Presumably, he intended to go firm and initiate a stand-off, but that didn’t work out so well for him – as you just saw.
