It’s time for a Freq Hop, where we share some of the various interesting social media platforms we follow. There are some good ones out there. Great ways to leverage that doomscrolling and turn it into a chance to be educated, edified, and entertained. Today’s installment: “B-AREV“. What does that stand for? We have no idea, but it’s another example of the best X accounts to watch. Well, for people like us, anyway.

B-AREV sourced image of a Kurdish YPG fighter in Syria. — This Kurdish YPG warfighter, reportedly somewhere in Syria in 2017, is using a Norinco CQ5 5.56mm assault rifle. He’s also doing the warning finger point long before Sophie Cunningham ever did! The YPGs are “People’s Protection Units” (Yekîneyên Parastina Gel) that form part of the Syrian Democratic Forces (and a US ally against forces of the Islamic State). They are similar to (and comprise) *Women’s* Protection Units (YPJ), which are all-female units.

B-AREV, on X as @trip_to_Valkiri, is an excellent online (social media) military history researcher and weapon archivist. The account publishes historic combat photos, weapon breakdowns, the occasional operational update, and some good open-source intelligence (OSINT) resources. Because the (Georgia-based?) account is prolific, including the posting of obscura, you’ll often see its watermark on imagery shared to other accounts, defense blogs, historical pages, forums, and the like.

B-AREV Visual History Archive

This is a great account for warfighters, history buffs, firearm enthusiasts, and, well…again, people like us. There are many people who wouldn’t get worked up about seeing what’s on a random Ukrainian firing range. We’re not those people.

MSBS Grot C16, AKS-74, and FN FNC on a Ukrainian firing range. — Seen here in one of B-AREV’s weapon archive posts: an FB MSBS Grot, FN FNC, and AKS-74. You’ve probably heard of the latter two, but that last one isn’t as common. The MSBS Grot is a Polish weapon from *FB “Łucznik” Radom*. It’s available in a couple of configurations; one of them (not the model seen here) is a bullpup.

We have no idea if it’s a single person, their gender, if there’s a team, or any of that. We just know the account is an excellent OSINT and visual history source.

Nigerian "white hat" peacekeeper assigned to the Cease-Fire Monitoring Group in Liberia, 1990. — A Nigerian ECOMOG peacekeeper armed with a Romanian MD90 rifle, Liberia, 1990. He was probably one of about 3,500 ECOWAS “Cease-Fire Monitoring Group” peacekeepers deployed to Liberia to stop the mass killings of the First Liberian Civil War. (ECOWAS = Economic Community of West African States; ECOMOG = Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group). Nigeria supplied the bulk of the manpower for the effort. Their deployment was the first time a regional organization stood up an intervention force without initial United Nations backing. Though initially sent in an observer role, they were quickly involved in combat operations and reportedly suffered several hundred KIA (including more than 500 Nigerian soldiers).

We’ll end with this one. B-AREV describes these men as Portuguese mercenaries from the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), an anti-communist organization operating in Africa in the 1970s. One of them is carrying an AKM. The ammo belt must be for a different weapon.
