The Walther PPK is a classic .380 pistol that is sold the world over. Although it is close to one hundred years old, James Bond enthusiasts and tasteful concealed carriers have ensured that the PPK series remains alive and well. But while the PPK is closely associated with the .380 ACP cartridge, historically the version in the softer shooting .32 ACP round was far more popular. Whether you are a fan of spy flicks, a student of interwar and midcentury German funny business, or simply want a PPK that won’t bleed your hands after a few boxes of ammo, the .32 is where it is at. With this in mind, Walther has rolled out the Walther PPK/s, PPK, and PP in .32 ACP after a decades long absence from the American market. Here is our overview of the PPK/s model in particular.
Walther PPK/s Quick Specs:
- Caliber: .32 ACP
- Capacity: 8+1
- Barrel Length: 3.3 in.
- Overall Length: 6.1 in.
- Width: 1 in.
- Weight: 1 lb., 9.5 oz. (loaded)
The Walther PPK/s originated as an answer to the Gun Control Act of 1968. The PPK/s has a longer PP grip with an eight-round magazine capacity and the shorter PPK 3.3-inch barrel and slide. As with most modern variants of the PPK line, the PPK/s in .32 ACP is an all-stainless-steel handgun that ships with checkered plastic grips. The pistol has a high mounted magazine button on the left side of the frame and no external slide release. It is double action/single action hammer fired pistol with a slide mounted decocker/safety.
On the range, the standard PPK in .380, thanks to its straight blowback action, shoots like a 9mm pistol in a much lighter package. Although the design is the same, the PPK/s in .32 ACP recoils little more than a .22 rimfire. Although the double action trigger pull is particularly heavy, the PPK/s is easy to shoot and the characteristic problems such as slide bite are much less pronounced. For those looking into the Walther PPK platform for the first time, the new PPK/s in .32, not .380, is worth a first look.
