The light rifle concept dates back to World War II, but the search for the ideal platform to put it into practice continues. Mindful of the German bewegungskrieg that stunned Western Europe in 1940, the US Army realized that there the rear-line troops were a thing of the past. Truck drivers, radio operators, cooks, and other logistic personnel were traditionally armed with handguns, but in this new war a more capable weapon was needed. The Army came up with the M1 Carbine, which was lighter and easier to stow than the standard issue M1 rifle. But the new .30 Carbine cartridge the platform used could reach out to 200 yards and was more shootable than a handgun.
As time and technology went on, the light rifle concept has been invented and then reinvented. Today, we have no shortage of rimfire rifles and pistol caliber carbines that simply lack the range of a standard rifle cartridge. It is also difficult to get an intermediate power cartridge in a light and compact platform. Even the lightest AR style rifles come in at over six pounds with no accessories.
