Reuters has published an excellent visual interactive digital reconstruction of the front line, the “Ukraine Kill Zone” between Ukraine and Russia. It is definitely worth a look, especially if you’re in the noble profession of arms.

Casualties and Battle Lines of the War

The Russo-Ukraine War has not only lasted longer than WW1 (by about a month and a half as of this writing), but it has also surpassed the duration of the “Great Patriotic War.” That was the Soviet-German war of WW2, which lasted 1,418 days between 1941 and 1945.

Casualties on both sides are appallingly high, most now caused by drones. The Center for Strategic & International Studies estimates that roughly 2 million soldiers have been killed, wounded, or gone missing since early 2022. Approximately 1.4 million of them are Russian. We’ll probably never know the exact numbers of soldiers lost from any nationality in the conflict.

Remember when the Russians were letting men out of prison in return for service at the front? They’re now releasing female prisoners early, dismissing their remaining sentence if they have children.

The Ukraine Kill Zone – Animated and Interactive

Hundreds, if not thousands, of KIA on both sides have been left on the battlefield, buried in trenches under rocket and artillery attacks, ground into the earth by the back and forth of tanks and other vehicles, or trapped beneath the structures they’d taken shelter in, collapsed down upon them.

The maps and illustrations aren’t a recreation of any specific sector of the front lines. Rather, they feature a concentration of demonstrative scenes from various areas of the battlefield to show how different elements of the two armies engage.

Reuters continues, “In the “kill zone” of Ukraine, surveillance and attack drones swarm the skies, hunting anything that moves. In this hellscape, buildings lie in ruins and trees are shredded.”
