There is always a certain number of strange products at SHOT, but finding someone working on a product at the intersection of weird and functional has to be the best feeling. CRKT seems to do just that in cooperation with knife designer Joe Caswell. They were turning heads at SHOT with the Provoke X. It’s a compact tool that challenges the expectations of what an axe can be. This design shrinks the familiar axe form factor to pocket size so you can carry it where you need to as quickly as possible.
Deploy with a Flick
CRKT has integrated its Kinematic technology into the Provoke X. For those who haven’t tried one of their Kinematic blades, this means a mechanism that allows the axe head to deploy with speed and fluidity.
It’s not spring-loaded like you’d expect based on similar designs. It’s a unique internal system that translates a simple flick of the wrist into a satisfying “snap” as the axe locks into place. Unfortunately, they only have a few of them on hand, and they’re all prototypes, so I just got to watch someone deploy it and show it off for a bit.
The deployment speed is reminiscent of a well-tuned assisted-opening knife, maybe even bordering on automatic, but perhaps a bit more controlled. What’s striking is the smoothness of the action. There doesn’t seem to be any jarring or resistance, just a seamless transition from closed to open.
This first impression makes me want to get my hands on it and see actually how it feels. It’ll be interesting to see how it handles under pressure and in various grips.
Built to Last?
The folks at the CRKT booth seemed pretty confident that the Provoke X is built robustly. It features a sturdy Deadbolt lock and a D2 steel blade, known for its durability. While we can’t confirm its performance without testing, it certainly appears ready for at least basic breaching and chopping.
CRKT has also incorporated an automatic safety mechanism into the design to prevent accidental deployment. This feature adds a layer of responsibility to the Provoke X, ensuring safe handling and carry.
Pocket-Sized Design
One of the Provoke X’s most striking aspects obviously is its compact size. This axe is designed for portability, easily fitting in a pant pocket or smaller pack pockets, and offers a unique tool for everyday carry or outdoor adventures.
The Renowned knifemaker Joe Caswell collaborated with CRKT on the Provoke X, drawing inspiration from his previous work on their Provoke karambit. This lineage is evident, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. I wasn’t able to talk to Joe at the show, but I did get to listen to him speak for a bit, and then later, I talked to some of the folks at the booth about his process.
Even if it resembles previous designs, it apparently went through 94 separate iterations before they got where they were this week at SHOT. I also got to hear how Joe came up with the design. Apparently, he thought it up in the car because he drives from Oregon to Georgia for Blade Show. So, if you need inspiration for your next big project, try driving across the country alone!
Why It Matters
The Provoke X is more than just a novelty. It represents a potential shift in how we think about Axe design innovation. In a world full of shows that end up being a lot of the same, it’s always nice to see someone pushing the envelope. Hopefully, it will end up being a solid, compact, and versatile tool for various users. Whether for outdoor enthusiasts, collectors, or those seeking a unique EDC option, the Provoke X is worth watching.
