Law enforcement officers and firearms knowledge tend to go hand in hand if you are looking to learn the ropes of owning a gun. But anyone who has been in the business long enough will tell you that cops are not necessarily gun people. Exhibit A is entered into evidence: the Colt New Police revolver.
The New Police ran in Colt’s catalog from 1896 to 1907 and was among the first modern swing-out cylinder revolver to see widespread acceptance. The revolver and the soft-shooting, accurate .32 S&W Long cartridge it uses proved to be a favorite of Theodore Roosevelt as he cleaned up marksmanship training at the NYPD. Based on that success, the Colt New Police and Police Positive revolvers and the .32 enjoyed wild success into the first decades of the 20th century until the age of the armored and motorized bad guy during the Great Depression. Long forgotten today, our own Jim Maybrick takes this 120+ year old wheel gun for a test drive.
