Are you on the prowl of a quality trigger for your AR-15/10? The HiperTouch Reflex trigger from HIPERFIRER is one of the best triggers I’ve seen in a while. Even if your not on the prowl, if you own an AR-15 rifle, you should still check out this awesome upgraded trigger.
Regardless of the quality of an AR, many gun loving gurus agree the trigger should be upgraded. This is because most manufacturers install a mil-spec trigger in their rifles. Mil-spec triggers are not bad per say, but they are not that great either.
A trigger can make or break your accuracy and speed, both of which are just a little important to have right?
I went years before I ever tried an upgraded trigger in my first AR. To be honest, I didn’t see the need to change anything. The old saying of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” was a standard I lived by. But then I attended my first AR-15 training course and was shown up by everyone, including a little girl.
Somehow they could all shoot faster than me and their shots were more accurate. At the time, I was putting in a lot of range time so this frustrated me. How were they all outshooting me with their rifles? One thing I noticed they all had in common was that every one of them had upgraded triggers in their rifles.
Of course this persuaded me to give one a try and the difference was, lets just say, obvious. A smooth, light-weight pull with a short reset makes more of a difference than you think.
About the Hipertouch Reflex trigger
The Hipertouch Reflex trigger is a drop-in upgrade designed to transform your rifle from average to exceptional. Well, almost. A little bit of it does depend on the shooter…
This trigger provides a crisp, clean break and an incredibly short reset. It was engineered primarily for AR platforms and aims to minimize pre-travel and creep. Of course, this allows you to fire follow-up shots with surgical precision.
While this is a great upgrade for competitive shooters, it’s also a great trigger for the average Joe like us.
On the specs side, the Reflex trigger offers an adjustable pull weight ranging from about 2.5 to 3.5 pounds. This allows you to fine-tune it to your preference.
Its travel distance is roughly 3mm, meaning you get minimal trigger travel before the break. That super-short reset helps keep your shots coming fast as well.
In short, your current trigger probably feels more like a reluctant handshake than a crisp tap on the shoulder. If it does, you need something like this in your life.
Installing the Hipertouch Reflex trigger
Some people like doing their AR-upgrades and others do not. There’s nothing wrong with either, if you are familiar with the AR-15 platform.
AR-15 triggers may be a little intimidating the first time you take one apart. But once you learn what each part is and what they do, it’s really quite simple.
I’ll go over the process of installing the trigger for those who plan to do it themselves.
Removing the current trigger
Of course, the first process is removing the current trigger from the lower receiver. I am installing my Hipertouch Reflex trigger in my BCM. The upper should be taken off and, if you have a way to hold up the lower receiver, it will make life a bit easier. I use the Real Avid AR-15 Smart Fit Vice Block which is well worth the money.
There are two trigger pins that hold your trigger assembly together. First, remove the one on top, which holds your hammer and hammer spring in place. Use a 1/8-inch punch to push the trigger pin out. Keep your thumb over the top of the trigger to keep anything from flying out.
Now, remove the second pin and again, place your thumb over the trigger assembly to make sure nothing gets lost. Lift the trigger assembly out of the lower receiver and place it in a small bag in case you ever need it again.
Installing the new trigger
The Reflex trigger has a few more components than a mil-spec trigger, but the instillation process is pretty easy. Start with placing the trigger assembly in the lower receiver. This part is pre-assembled from the company. Once the trigger is in place, insert the trigger pin.
Next is the hammer. You will need to install the hammer spring before placing it over the trigger assembly. Make sure the hammer spring is on correctly as shown in the photos below. Insert the second trigger pin to hold it in place.
Normally, this would be the final step when installing a new trigger. However, HIPERFIRE uses a toggle yoke to hold two toggle springs onto each side of the trigger.
Place the toggle yoke into the slot on the hammer and then slide matching springs onto each side of the toggle yoke. Then place the small end-cap over the springs and toggle yoke as you rotate the assembly into place.
Note: The green springs will give you a trigger weight of about 2.5 lbs. (light) and the red springs of 3.5 + lbs. (medium).
Now you can test the trigger to make sure it is functioning correctly before re-installing the upper receiver.
On the range with the Hipertouch Reflex trigger
Like anything else in life, the proof is in the pudding. Every company talks up their product so the only way to see how it really performs is to use it, a lot.
Shooting a lot of ammo for a review can become expensive so I want to thank the guys over at AmmoToGo.com for providing some Hornady .223 55gr FMJ training ammo for the review. Without partners like this, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do!
Before I started blasting away on the range, I took my trigger gauge to see what it showed. I used the green springs which should be around 2.5 lbs. After multiple pulls, my gauge averaged 2.57 which is spot on.
They offer the Hipertouch in both curved and straight triggers, but I opted for the traditional curved trigger this time.
On the range, I shot a few rounds to become familiar with the trigger pull and then dumped the mag. There is no take-up at all on this trigger. Some will like this and some won’t. When you apply just a little pressure, “click.” I kind of like this as it makes long-distance shots easier.
What was the most surprising however is the trigger reset. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a reset this short before. As soon as you let off the pressure from the trigger, it resets and is ready for the next shot.
Smooth is fast…
I shot some long distance shots, and ran multiple drills throughout the day using my BCM with the new trigger.
Because I like some of the old-school gear from back in the day, I used my original Trigicon ACOG. This was the icing on the cake for this rifle. The 3X magnification was crystal clear and the smooth trigger just made shooting fun.
There is no question, I was able to shoot faster than I could with some of my other rifles. As soon as I sent a round downrange, the reset and follow-up pull was smooth and natural feeling.
A worthy upgrade?
At $225 this trigger is definitely a good buy. According to the company it was also used by Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2. Most movies are so full of fluff that I could care less what guns or gun parts are in them. But that dude can shoot like a pro in real life, so that’s just darn cool.
If your looking for something just a little different, HIPERFIRE has a wide range of triggers for different purposes. Check them out and see if they have something to make your AR-15 just a little more special.
