OVERWATCH is a new game recently announced at BlizzCon. In the trailer they mention, “…soldiers, scientists, adventures and oddities..”
That sounds like a lot of people we’ve served with, so we figured we’d check it out.
We didn’t first realize that Blizzard was the one making the FPS/shooter. Blizzard, of course, is the company responsible for such series as Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Turns out they are the ones making OVERWATCH, and that it’s the first entirely new game they’ve made in nearly 20 years.
Here is the cinematic trailer:
It’s like if Pixar was less family oriented and more concerned with giant gorillas, big guns, big boobs and British chicks fighting teleporting shotgun wizards and other hot hot chicks who can disappear. (This is, by the way, something we could watch for hours.)
Overwatch is a class based, team oriented, first person shooter. There wasn’t a whole lot of information released at BlizzCon (Blizzard Entertainment’s convention), but we’ll tell you what we know. It currently has twelve “character classes” in the form of people (with more on the way) to choose from; Tracer, Reaper, Widowmaker, Winston, Pharah, Reinhardt, Symmetra, Torbjörn, Bastion, Hanzo, Mercy, and Zenyatta. These characters operate less like your normal COD based classes and more like a League of Legends style RPG class. They all have some individually unique special abilities to augment firearms, hammers, bows, fists and at least one wrench-arm-thing?
Seriously, WTF is that thing Torbjörn has replacing his left arm? It’s like he’s a proctologist from the VA (or one of those clear cages beneath the Cabin in the Woods).
At the moment it does have a release date, but it does have a Beta coming out soon and hopefully not “soon™. ” This is PC only at the moment, sorry console fan boys. You can sign up for the Beta on the website we’ll link at the bottom of this article.
Anyway, no this isn’t our typical fare, but some of our minions have been fans of Blizzard for a long time and are really looking forward to this game – don’t lie, some of you guys get your nerd on too, we’ve seen you do it. Here’s a chance to throw some different color into your FPS gaming palette. It might be worth taking a break from assorted dystopian futures with their green and brown hues to buy Overwatch when it comes out. That is assuming of course if it isn’t free-to-play when it comes out, which is certainly possible, we just don’t know yet. If you want more info on the classes and the game in general go to this website.
Here, have some game play footage.
If you guys want more of this kind of content let us know. For that matter let us know if you want us to organize some kind of “game day” where a bunch of you and some of us can get our dork on all together. This has been a NERDALCON.
