Anyone who’s compared fake titties from the 1960’s (no offense to the “ladies” at Nancy’s Squat ‘n’ Gobble) and the modern man-made mammaries should have a deep appreciation for the advancement of technology. Mad Duo
JTF Awesome member American Defense Manufacturing (ADM) released a new buffer a few months ago. We know, please hold your applause until the end. It’s surprising that you’re unable to contain your excitement as much as you have so far.
Enough with the sarcasm, let’s discuss why it’s probably actually worth a shit. We’ve heard this tune before, but not quite like this. There are heavier buffers (that are beneficial in many cases), dubious buffers with springs and widgets (that are not), buffers full of heavy powdered metals, ultralight skeletonized buffers, underweight shitty Chinese buffers, intermediate buffers, and well, now ADM’s Reliability-Enhancing HD Buffer (we assume that ‘HD’ stands for, ‘Heavy Duty’ and not ‘High Definition’ like those ads meant to sell glasses to grandma)
Some found the initial press release a little confusing. Let’s read through it:
The ADM Reliability Enhancing Buffer
In 1966 Colt patented a buffer to deal with runaway cyclic rate of fire in full auto. Runaway fire caused component damage, light primer strikes in rapid fire from bolt bounce, and reliability issues with the original design. Colt’s patented buffer eliminated many problems.
It is commonly known that rifle-length M16 systems are smoother and lighter recoiling as well as more reliable than carbines. That’s because the rifle-length buffer provides an optimal balance of reciprocal and non-reciprocal mass. But that longer buffer is slaved to the non-adjustable rifle-length stock that’s unpopular for obvious reasons. The standard carbine buffer is inferior, with far from optimal reciprocal and non-reciprocal mass plus an abbreviated platter of weights which operate as one sliding mass. The weights don’t have room or plurality necessary to force them to be staggered.
But the ADM reliability-enhancing buffer provides non-reciprocal weight matching the rifle length buffer, coupled with a platter of weights that impact in a staggered sequence to eliminate bolt bounce. This provides Cadillac-smooth performance without resorting to springs or hydraulic systems which can wear and fail. Machined from stainless steel, the ADM reliability enhancing buffer is a piece of functional art. ADM isn’t assembling a rifle; they’re designing and manufacturing rifles that are superior to existing systems.
Admittedly, it sounds kinda dry, and to many it smacks of a famous WC Fields quote, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.” But please bear in mind, this is frickin’ ADM we’re talking about here–about the opposite of a fly-by-night company that briefly churns out subpar products before folding. It stands to reason that we should at the very least give them a longer look.
Without getting all Neil deGrasse Tyson about it, what ADM is saying is that they’ve found a way to find the smoothness and reliability of a rifle length buffer system using your normal carbine receiver extension (that’s the “buffer tube” to you plebes). One of the limitations of the carbine receiver extension is the length (which is also why the Vltor A5 uses an intermediate length buffer and receiver extension). With a carbine you only have so much space for buffers, and therefore the swinging weights that reside inside them. What ADM did was eliminate the buffer body altogether. The weights (head of the buffer included) all surround a center axis pin and can move independently. With this configuration, you’ll get more ‘swing’ in the same amount of space.
Here’s a super short video of using the ADM buffer like a shake weight so you can see what we’re talking about
We’re told that these buffer will work in most any configuration, to include 7.62N ARs, without getting weird. We have one inbound so we’ll do a more extensive breakdown in the near future. In the meantime, visit ADM’s homepage here, or follow them on Facebook or Instagram.
