The film stars Mark Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, and Ronda Rousey, and follows an elite CIA task force that has to escort a high-priority asset 22 miles to an extraction point while being hunted by terrorists.
CIA agent James Silva is stationed in Indonesia, having been demoted over a prior mission that ended poorly, where he is now investigating the murder of three CIA agents alongside his younger female partner Sam Snow. With the job having taken all her energy, the divorced Sam only wants now to finish up her assignment and get back to America so she can be with her seven-year-old daughter India. But when Lieutenant Li Noor of the Indonesian state police kills a local gang member in a raid, he realizes too late that the man was the nephew of James Bishop, a deadly crime lord. And after his home is bombed and his family killed, the intelligent and lethal fighter Li Noor is now on the run for his own life when he approaches the US embassy and promises information on the dead CIA agents in exchange for protection.
Mile 22 Trailer #1:
Silva and Snow are now both tasked with shepherding Li Noor 22 miles out of the city to an airstrip in order to get him out of the city alive. But when the vengeful and violent Bishop puts a $200,000 bounty on Li Noor’s life, that task gets increasingly complicated with Bishop’s underworld criminals at every turn. But when the Indonesian police ambush the group along their route, killing several members of their unit, Snow soon realizes that not only are they up against every possible force in the city but that there is definitely a mole within their group tipping them off. And as she begins to suspect Silva of being the traitor, she realizes she must fight with every ounce of her ability in order to stay alive the entire 22 miles.
Principal photography on the film was shot in Atlanta, Georgia in November and December 2017 under the working title Ground Branch, and in Colombia in the capital city Bogotá and its surroundings in January and February 2018. On February 5, 2018, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos showed up during filming in one of the locations in Colombia. Director Peter Berg even had President Santos try to shoot one of the action sequences of the film.
The movie is intended to be a starting point to a multi-media franchise. After its release, STXsurreal announced that they will produce a short-term live-action series called The Kiev Exchange. The series will follow the CIA’s elusive paramilitary force, Ground Branch, as they negotiate a tense and complex hostage exchange in a public square. Berg will return to direct and it will be written by Umair Aleem, with the film’s producers returning to produce the series, which is expected to be released sometime later in 2018. There are also plans for a feature film sequel in the early stages of development.
