The latest pack from Haley Strategic Partners is the D3 FlatPack PLUS. It’s based on their very popular Flat Pack. If you haven’t already guessed from its name, it is a bit bigger than its predecessor and has more room for storage.

The Flat Pack Plus caught my attention due to its versatility and low profile signature. It was a little difficult for me to gauge how big (or small) it was from the pictures and descriptions online, so I asked for more information. HSP sent me one in the Coyote Tan colorway. I initially thought it was pretty small when I first received it, but later came to appreciate its size for reasons I’ll get to in a bit.

Dimensions from the HSP website:

Compressed

Main compartment- 14″ x 10″ x 3.5″ Admin Pocket- 1″ x 10.5″ x 7″

Expanded

Main Compartment -14″ x 10″ x 6″ Admin Pocket- 2″ x 10.5″ x 7″

Depending on your needs, you can quickly adjust the capacity by expanding or collapsing the compartments via the external zippers. The main compartment can be zipped all the way down on the sides, allowing it to open like a shell. This makes it easy to configure and access the contents. The interior is fully lined with Velcro to accommodate Flatpack accessories (sold separately) or any others equipped with hook and loop (which of course gives you a place for your morale patches).

The possibilities are extensive, thanks to the interior velcro panels. Everything can be rearranged in seconds for an updated mission or assignment. Behind the Velcro panel is space for a hydration system up to a one-liter capacity, with a channel for the hose at the center top section of the pack. In front of the main compartment is a flat pocket that is perfect for a tablet, notepad or a thin and small laptop. The admin pocket is a good size that can store lots of little items, and expand to hold more if necessary. It’s a good spot for a quick access med kit since it’s out in front.

The straps are thin and low-profile with a chest strap for stability. They don’t have any padding and are quite rigid. Initially I thought it’d be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time but I was wrong. I found them to be perfect for a pack of this size. From everything I’ve used it for in the past few months, its size doesn’t allow you to overload yourself.

It can be worn as a standard backpack, over body armor, or attached to the back of a plate carrier. To attach to a plate carrier (PC), detach the shoulder straps and use the two MOLLE straps closer to the center between the shoulder straps. The FlatPack Plus was designed to be compatible with the D3CRX chest rigs, and can replace the harness if that’s something you want for a lightweight loadout.

I have gone through many different packs for work over the years, and this is by far my favorite thus far. I use my pack to carry additional medical supplies, spare magazines, batteries, my tablet, a notepad, power bank and charger cables.

My (current) daily setup for work and everyday carry are as follows:

Main Compartment:

– 1 Small HSP Accessory Pouch for small items.

– 1 Large HSP Accessory Pouch filled with medical supplies.

– 2 Vertx Tactigami mag pouches

– notepads

Flat Pocket:

– Tablet storage

Admin Pocket:

– Power Bank, Charger cables, miscellaneous items.

I place my agency ID tags on the velcro panel inside when I’m not at work. It also works well as a mobile morale patch mat, for those who would use such a thing. I attached a Thyrm Switchback to store spare CR123 batteries on the right side strap attachment point. It’s there if I need to get to them, but remains unobtrusive and out of the way.

The flat profile makes the pack very easy to store most places, especially in vehicles. Significantly, it will fit easily into footwells and doesn’t snag when you need to grab and go. For this reason, I carry it basically everywhere I go and reconfigure it to meet my needs for any particular day or trip.

Other uses for the FlatPack Plus:

Range/Weapon Storage. It easily stores a pistol or two with velcro holster straps. This makes it a great discrete range bag or a way to carry an extra backup gun.

Travel/Commuter. Its low profile makes it easy to make your way through crowded environments. It would be an easy carry-on when flying.

Medic Pack. With the optional HSP pouches in small and large sizes, you can organize medical supplies with the option for expansion if you want to carry more.

Tactical Storage. I can see it being attached to a Tactical Team member’s plate carrier to hold extra mags, batteries, commo equipment, flash bangs or whatever that should be accessible to their partners. That wouldn’t work too well if you’re running solo though, since you’d have to remove your armor to access the contents.

Training Courses. You can carry your pistol, mags, eye and ear pro, and boxes of ammo (probably still need an additional ammo carrier but everything else should fit just fine).

Short Hikes. Throw in a hydration pouch, first aid kit and snacks and you’re good to go on a day hike.

There are many other roles this pack can fill. The FlatPack Plus is a tactical and practical pack that flies under the radar in public. It is easily adaptable to cover almost any mission. For me it’s a perfect pack that fits my work and EDC needs. Like I said before, I always have it on me or in the car. It’s the jack of all trades for most people of all walks of life, not just those in the tactical field. It’s the right size to handle just about anything you need, short of needing a full day pack. It has been with me for months, thrown into my car and trunk, and is still holding up very well with no noticeable wear.

When it comes to quality, durability and versatility, my opinion is: the HSP FlatPack Plus is hard to beat.
