9-11 Should Not Be Remembered In Schools

Wait…what?

David Reeder

A member of my family attends high school in Springfield, MO. That school is doing nothing whatsoever today to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The subject has not been brought up by faculty or staff, there was no moment of silence — nothing.

When she asked why, she was advised by a school administrator that they’d been “…asked not to do anything because it might cause it long term effects on people.”

Think about that for a second.

A “lasting effect” on students? I should hope to God so.

How did we get to a place like this?

So now we’re not only raising a generation of victims, but we’re fostering ignorance to somehow protect them from reality? Trigger warnings, coordinated efforts to ignore and vilify violence as though it doesn’t exist and is not occasionally called for.  I’d intended to write a long, impassioned op-ed about this, but I’m virtually incapable of articulating a coherent response.

The bodies in the picture below are our people. They jumped from one of the Twin Towers rather than burn alive. They’re just a handful of the 3,000 people murdered by Wahhabists. Posting this image isn’t sensational or salacious, it’s a reality check, and it’s one many of need.

Those kids shouldn’t just be allowed to observe a moment of silence, they should formally instructed about the attack —  and all the ones since (and before). They should see raw, unadulterated photographs, listen to radio broadcasts, watch video, and not just from the 9/11 attack. They should learn about the Alfred P. Murrah Building, the D.C. “Beltway Sniper” attacks, the 2013 Boston Marathon attack, the 2015 San Bernardino attack…that’s the world we live in.

God forgive we scar them with knowledge of a little place I like to call the Real World.

As one of my friends from the NYPD’s Bomb Squad said this afternoon, “The further we get from 9/11/01 the closer we get to 9/10/01.”

Reeder Profile Picture 5About the Author: It might not be too surprising that David Reeder, who never met a $50 word he didn’t like, one of the “leaders” of the pedagogic and frequently obstreperous Breach Bang Clear team — insomuch as they have a leader (the terms orchestra conductor and rodeo clown are equally apropos). A former POG who tastes like chicken, Reeder cannot play the harmonica. He founded Breach-Bang-Clear quite accidentally at his young son’s behest several years ago. He is the Mad Duo’s Chief Wretched Flunky and Breach-Bang-Clear’s HMFIC. A LEO for many years and former AF Security Forces SNCO, he was an O/C at the National Homeland Security Training Center for many years and a longtime MOUT instructor at the Bold Lighting UWS. Reeder has appeared on Fox News Business and written for a number of publications, from US News & World Report and Military.com to RECOIL Magazine and Soldier Systems Daily. All of that sounds way cooler than it actually is. You can read more about him here. Follow his banality on Instagram, @davidreederwrites.

I have 3 kids, and I asked my oldest “Did they do anything at school today, like a September 11th Memorial?” His answer, “What’s September 11th?” My eyes welled up, knowing that I am partially at fault. My boys have anxiety issues and my work as a firefighter & cop is enough on them as it is. So my wife & I have held back on telling them about most of the evil in the world. But, that really is sorry excuse. I have since sat him down and tried to explain on his level as best as I could that 3000 human lives were murdered because of evil men and their crazy Islamic beliefs. I do think it’s hard to convey the atrocity to young kids who weren’t even conceived yet, or perhaps I need to find a better way to share it. Either way, his principal will be getting a letter from me about it.

WTH, I was there 16 years ago for 10 days, I do presentations every year in my town so these kids don’t forget, that Principal needs to be fired. We can’t forget all those that died including my fellow first responders. Over 300 police and firefighters have died since then from cancer, why would we forget. I survived my stage 4 cancer from 5 years ago. I will be glad to do my presentation at the school anytime.

Unfathomable to me that kids are not being taught about this nor even have it recognized. The mind reels.

The statement ” the closer we get to 9/10/01 ” is quite profound….and makes me sad to ponder it.

We said we would never forget….and yet not even 20 years later we are starting to do just that. Appalling.
